I recently had to the opportunity to talk to Montgomery, Ala. high school students about the importance of a positive image.
Your image is the first important step to having a successful career. How you present yourself will play a major role with landing that great job. Images creates opportunities that will take you a long way in life. Putting forth your best image influences other people to see you as competent, confident and capable.
When determining your career path, you must also determine your style of clothing. Your attire will be very significant when pursuing your passion and career. Make sure your clothes fit you appropriately for the occasion. You should feel comfortable but work appropriate. The clothes you wear and how you groom yourself will impact the way other people will see you or even hear what you say. It will also determine if they trust or distrust you.
Learn to have balance with your attire. The way you dress for a business conference or even as a professional on a daily basis, will be totally different than what you would wear to a high school sports game.
If you feel that you need help with creating your image, seek help. Find you a role model or even a mentor, a friend; someone that can also serve as an accountability partner. Learn to expose yourself to something or someone much bigger than you. The time to do this is now, if you haven’t already, learning this later in life isn’t easy to tackle. Your best shot at looking your best is to have someone personally look at how your clothes fit you and give you honest feedback.
7 Tips for Creating Your Best Image
Don’t compare yourself to others. Be your unique self. One of my favorite fashion quotes is by a British Fashion Designer, Anna Wintour, “Create your own style, let it be unique, yet identifiable with others.
Have an accountability partner. People who can tell you the truth without you becoming offended.
Ask questions. Don’t make assumptions. Find the courage to ask questions and to express what you really want. Communicate to others as clearly as you can to avoid misunderstanding, sadness, and drama.
Be confident. It can be your best accessory.
Don’t take anything personally. Nothing others do is because of you. What others say and do is a projection of their own reality, their own dream.
Be Impeccable with your words. Speak with integrity. Say only what you mean. Avoid using your words to speak against yourself or to gossip about others. Use the power of your words in the direction of truth and love.
Always do your best. Your best will change from moment to moment. It will be different when you are healthy as opposed to sick. Under any circumstance, simply do your best, and you will avoid self judgement, self-abuse, and regret.
Whatever signal you’re trying to send to the world, never forget the attire you’re wearing will determine the way it’s received. So, dress carefully.
